Uncle Leo's South Shore Pita Grill Information

Uncle Leo's South Shore Pita Grill at 8 California Pl N, Island Park, NY 11558, has quickly become one of those spots you tell friends about after just one visit. The restaurant brings back a familiar charm for anyone who knew it from its earlier days on Long Beach Road. Now refreshed and re-energized, it delivers a menu packed with flavor, generous portions, and the kind of comfort food that earns repeat customers without even trying.

What really stands out here is how fresh everything tastes. One reviewer mentioned that the shaved chicken gyro platter came with bright Israeli salad and creamy hummus-nothing oily, heavy, or overly salty. That pretty much sums up the approach at Uncle Leo’s. Even simple items feel thoughtfully prepared. Another diner raved about the homemade lentil soup, calling it flavorful and satisfying, the kind of bowl that makes you want to order it again the next time you stop by.

If vegetarian dishes are your thing, this place makes them shine. The veggie patty platter is known for its large portion size and balanced flavors. The hummus is smooth and rich, and the Greek salad comes loaded with feta. The warm pita makes the whole meal even better-especially when filled with that same veggie patty, lettuce, cucumber, tomato, and onions. Spinach pie also gets repeated love in the reviews, with people saying it’s consistently excellent.

Moussaka and spinach pie, two classics that longtime customers remember, capture the nostalgic vibe that many mention. One guest described taking the first bite and feeling like they were transported back to “the good old days,” noting how the flavors are just as memorable as ever.

While most people focus on the food, those who dine in also point out that the atmosphere is clean, comfortable, and newly updated. The team here shows clear pride in what they serve, and the friendly service adds to the welcoming feel. You’ll even find homemade chocolate chip cookies that diners say are worth adding to your order.

With highly positive reviews and plenty of standout dishes, Uncle Leo’s South Shore Pita Grill continues to earn its reputation as a reliable spot for fresh meals, flavorful platters, and warm hospitality in Island Park.

What People's Say About Place

*5/5 stars* "I'm thrilled to see Uncle Leo's South Shore (formerly Pete's on Long Beach Road) back in action! As a regular customer in the past, I was excited to try it out again. Let me tell you, folks, Leo is back and better than ever! I ordered the moussaka, spinach pie, and salad, and it was like tasting the good old days all over again. The food was fantastic, and I couldn't be happier. If you're looking for a taste of nostalgia with amazing flavors, look no further. Uncle Leo's is a must-go! Welcome back, Leo - you've got a loyal customer in me!"

I ordered the food, to be delivered, so I cannot comment, on the atmosphere. The veggie patty platter, was large, and, delicious, with luscious, creamy, hummus, and, a Greek salad, on the platter, with plenty of feta cheese, covering the salad. I also ordered spinach pie, which was excellent. My husband, ordered a veggie patty, in a pita. The pita, was warm, and the generous-sized veggie patty, was very good, with lettuce, and, cucumber, tomato, and, onion slices. All was quite satisfactory. I’m looking forward, to trying the lentil soup, next time, and, will order the veggie patty platter, again, a nice vegetarian meal.

The food is very fresh & delicious. I ordered a platter with shaved chicken gyro meat, Israeli salad and hummus. Not greasy or salty. Perfect! The lentil soup is homemade, great flavor. It’s pleasant to eat there as it’s new, clean and neat. The homemade chocolate chip cookies were also good. The people were very friendly and accommodating. They take pride & care. No bathroom, so go beforehand.

This food was PHENOMENAL. It was a quick decision to stop in and order take-out for lunch, but I was floored by how good this place was!! We got the grilled chicken platter, falafel platter, side of lemon potatoes and rice pilaf. Everything was *literally* incredible. The falafel was the best I have had to date, perfectly crispy and crunchy. The chicken was perfectly seasoned. The potatoes and rice were buttery and savory. And the salad was refreshing! My only regret is not ordering an additional side of pita bread (The meal comes with pita for each order but I should’ve ordered more given how large the meal was). The portions are HUGE - this lasted us two lunches (and I might say it was even better the following day!). Definitely order from here if you can - you won’t be disappointed!

Love Leo! Welcome home. It is hard to find great Greek food. The spinach pie, moussaka, gross, soulvaki are perfect salads delicious.. They were missed!! Ice machine needs to get fixed, but so what!

Best Greek food on the island. This little mom and pop shop is pristine, fresh, and delicious. We took our lunch special (gyro, fries, drink $15) to go, and the fries were still steamy and crispy when we got home. The gyro had the perfect blend of toppings, and the best part was that although the portion was large, it could actually still be eaten by hand. Nothing fell apart. The quality was fantastic. There was no chewy fat on the meat, the lettuce was crunchy, the tzatziki was tangy… it was PERFECT! Baklava was out of this world. Big smiles behind the counter from the owners, which also just made it taste that much better. Cannot WAIT to go back.

My wife and I order from this restaurant at least once a week, and it’s consistently fantastic. The food is always fresh, flavorful, and prepared with care—every dish tastes just as delicious as the last time we had it. The consistency is truly impressive. On top of that, the staff is wonderful. Leo and the rest of the team are always friendly, welcoming, and go out of their way to accommodate any request. It’s clear they take pride in both their food and their service. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a place that delivers on both quality and hospitality every single time.
